mommy dearest

Obviously, I didn't post a challenge this week for the first time.
I would like to give you some dramatic, deep, soul-searching reason, but I don't have one. I simply didn't do it. I'm not going to. You can't make me. And if you want to ground me to my room, the idea of being sent to my bed actually sounds quite heavenly.
I did, however, have a few random realizations this last weekend.

It has been apparent for a month or so, my lack of coolness. Hitting up a few Labor Day sales however, really iced the cake. Brand names. I have no and I mean absolutely no idea what brands are in or what brands are out. I used to be very up on the in.

In high school, my best friend Bridget and I would work our tails off to support our weekly shopping trips to the trendiest stores in town. My oh-so-cool college roommates introduced me to a slightly more refined and expensive taste. Now though- I have no clue. It has been a long.....very, very long time since I went in to a store to buy jeans. We are talking several kids ago long time. Of the two good pairs I own, one was for $6 from a thrift shop and happens to be the pair from flab to fab. The other was ordered on line off of a clearance sale.
I ramble.
So, shopping on Monday. I first realized that the brand of jeans that I would list as a "go-to, never-fail" brand is now sold at Wal-Mart. Ugh. Wal-Mart. Now I can't buy them. They are not "not cool" because they are sold at Wal-Mart, I just have major Wal-Mart issues.
Next, I went to a "cool" store. Many, many brands. Who knows? Definitely not me.
The best part? I don't even care. Button them up without any major muffin toppage and I am a happy momma.

Against all of my teenage will, I am slowly, but surely, turning in to my mother.
There are shirts hanging in my closet that I wore 10+ years ago. Vintage baby!
I give my kids and husband "the look."
My 2nd daughter is super cute. Just like my mom I tell ya. (and yes, my 1st daughter is cute too, and so is my older sister.)

So, I am wondering.....am I normal? Are any of you turning in to your mother? What do you do that you swore you would never do?

  1. So happy I won the necklace! I will pay once the kids are all out the door to school.

Incidentally, I found your blog through this benefit auction. Your blog is GREAT! I sit here typing, in my old jeans (OLD jeans), wearing a ponytail, I've somehow acquired my mother's voice whenever I reprimand my kids, I never go shopping for myself (I often buy things for myself in haste -- things on "sale" of course -- while clothes shopping with my kids). Needless to say, I am loving your blog! =) It's nice to find I'm not the only one in blogland who is stuck in a mommy-rut! =)

  2. The answer to that is a resounding NO. I love my mom- but I learned a lot of my 'what not to do' lessons from her. I have come to the realization that those lessons are just as valuable.

  3. I would say one thing I do that I SWORE I never would do is pretend I am listening to the kids when they are talking. It always drove me NUTS that my mom would do that--I know she missed most of what we told her and I never felt important. But I find myself doing that sometimes now--especially when the stories are made up and drawn out...but I have really been trying lately to LISTEN and hear each word and give attention to that.

  4. Oh there are sooo many things that I don't do, but ohhh so many that I do. Yes, I have perfected "the look, the voice" etc. I have a similar haircut--ouch! (but mine is even more trendy than hers, hah!) But I will never, EVER wear the jeans my mother did/does...I don't do well with the pants up under the boobs (ok, it's not THAT bad, but close enough!)

  5. I love my mom! When I was younger, I swore I wouldn't be like her, but the more I "grow up" the more I look at things and say "What would Mom do?" One thing I hated her saying was 'save your money' when we wanted things. She didn't go buy us anything we wanted and that taught us a lot! I find myself saying that to my 6 year old and it works!

  6. Ooooo - Rachel's response totally hit home for me! I've got a 4 year old that NEVER STOPS TALKING and I do tend to tune him out way too often. All his sweet little 4 yr. old desires and thoughts just wasted on me as I make mental grocery lists and stuff like that. So sad! I am changing my ways this instant.

As for becoming my mom, I absolutely refuse to let that happen. However, I have found recently that wear my glasses for days at a time instead of putting in my contacts - I used to think my mom was such a nerd when she would do that! In my defense, I think my glasses are pretty cool. But still...

  7. I've been turning into my mom since I was a teenager. And I have no problem with that - I love my mom! Is she stylish, hip, trendy, with-it, or whatever kids are calling it these days? No, and she hasn't been since college. But she's wonderful. And I was never "cool" in the clothing department anyway. So it doesn't bother me all that much that I don't know what brands are "in" or not. I only ever shop at thrift stores and Wal-Mart (sorry!) anyway.

  8. I knew it was a possibility that I could quite easily become my mother, and I'm cool with most of the similarities. When it comes to clothes shopping, I will never be my mom! I'm too selfish! I want nice things and she always went without so her kids could have what was cool. I only wish I could be more selfless but I also feel like moms deserve to feel good about themselves, too. I talked to her the other day and mentioned the swimsuit she said she liked from Eddie Bauer was on sale for 89 dollars (yes, on sale!) And she said, "I know, I bought it!" You could have heard my jaw hit the floor! I am still just so happy that she did something extravagant for herself because no one deserves it more!
