Scandalous.
Thankful Monday.
Years ago, I remember seeing the commercials for the upcoming new show. It was going to be a hit. It was going to be unlike anything viewers had ever seen. It was prime-soap opera scandal, wrapped up with a perfect white picket fence. I thought, then, that Desperate Housewives was fit for viewers who were in fact, just that: desperate, for something to watch.
Fast forward a few years and a few kids later. I dig this show. I can relate to the characters. Not so much the sleazy, skeazy parts, but very much the mommish, scatterbrained, housewife parts.
The local ABC channel has been airing the first season after the late-night news and I think I am hooked.
(Mother: yes, I remember our deep conversation back in '04, at the old house. You were in the old tattered blue chair, I was reclining in the striped sectional. We were having a "What has the world come to?" conversation all stemming from the newest filth to hit the American airwaves; Desperate Housewives. Well.....Mom.....um....uh.....you see, I didn't think just watching it once would hurt....the remote was lost! I couldn't change the channel.......and, um...well....I just wanted to fit in....and...well....uh.... guilty as charged. I hope you can look me in the eyes as we feast on your perfect stuffing at Thanksgiving dinner.)
Every year, I seem to find my newest guilty-pleasure TV show. Generally, I am about 5 years behind the rest of the world in my "discoveries," but, whatever. I fluctuate from funny fluff like Everybody Love's Raymond, Friend's, (how did I miss an entire decade of pop culture?), to another certain scandalous show formerly on HBO, now edited for local viewing.....but I can't actually type the name of it- or else I really might not get to enjoy my Mother's Thanksgiving dinner. Awwwkkkwwwarrrddd. Why is it that even as a grown woman, I still need to live up to certain expectations? Is it an innate desire to be good and wholesome? Or maybe just a really strong desire to enjoy a steaming heap of holiday mashed potatoes and gravy? The world will never know.
Guilty pleasures. Everyone should have one. (G-rated of course, family friendly blog here.) I am thankful for mine. What is yours? What are you thankful for today? I really, really want to find out that I am not alone in my "rebellious" ways. Gabby? Susan? Lynette? Bree? Anyone?

I seriously just left you a novel here and blogger had an error while sending it!!!! ARGH!!
ReplyDeleteI'll try again but it won't be as funny cuz now I'm a little ticked!
ReplyDeleteWe are sooooOOOO much alike!! I too missed the whole decade of Friend's. They are hilarious!! I have now made up for it by owning seasons 4-8. In my defense, I was a young teen when they first came out and I wasn't allow to watch them. So I just never got started! (Now I'm hooked and most of the jokes I say are Friend's base! :)
I also have to admit that I love watching Bree clean her house, while gabby makes drama in her life, while Susan (my favorite) stumbles along in hers. Oh and Lynette. Poor Lynette. I feel for her, ya know. Poor girl. Her husband Tom and my hubby chris are like twins, from another mother! We have actually had some of the same fights, scary I know!! I didn't watch them on TV cause we don't have cable. I got addicted when my hubby left for 2 two and I was bored. I watched them online. Now I have seasons 1-3. I have to wait until 4 finishes and comes out..or I'll watch it online when my hubby leaves in two weeks....bye honey!! :)
ReplyDeleteI HAVE to admit now, that my guilty pleasure are these things called Muddy Buddies. It's chocolate chips, peanut butter, butter and a splash of vanilla all melted together. You pour it over Chex cereal. Then you toss them in powdered sugar...oh my goodness, yum! I make it for myself and hide it so I dont' have to share with my hubby! (I know, I know, it's bad but I do!!) I only bring it out for my friend, Mychel..cuz she shares her stash with me! (If you come it my house, it's behind the flour and sugar in the pantry!
ReplyDeletegUILTY PLEASURE? Desperate housewives is definitely not one of them for me. But I DO have many. Okay...I just thought of one. There is a show (I can't remember the title right now...um....Dr. 90210 or something.) Anyway, it's a plastic surgery show. I love to follow the Dr.'s life story. I skip all the surgery and go only to the part where the Dr is with his family. I don't know why this is so fascinating or enjoyable to watch...quite strange, really.
ReplyDeleteSunkist. Who knew it was caffiene laden?
ReplyDeleteThat's my guility pleasure.
For TV viewing sometimes I watch Desperate Housewives--sometimes, the show that I really feel is a train wreck to watch is Brothers & Sisters, but yet I still watch--sometimes, not all the time.
Well, Im with ya on the TV shows. Camille, I had the exact conversation with my family about Desperate Housewives around '04. Yes, we watch it now.
ReplyDeleteDr. Pepper and Desperate Housewives. I too found Desperate Housewives a little late. About season three. I didn't find out how enjoyable Dr. Pepper is until about three years ago. Since then I have fallen for it. When I am pregnant and don't drink it is a very long nine months!
ReplyDeleteI love, love, love Fanpop.com. It allows me to watch some tv shows on line when I want for free. Project Runway is one of them. I can't wait until Thursday comes around and the kids are taking a nap and I can sit at my computer and watch whatever i want because my husband is a work and the kids will not come up behind me.
ReplyDeleteLove it. Oh, yeah, and Jim Boys Tacos. They are the best and always make me feel better.
my quilty pleasure for sure is watching tv after i put my kids to bed. i love watching desperate housewifes, just last night joe was wanting to show me stuff on the computer and i told him after my show!!! another quilty pleasure is the show girls next door, alot of people think it's bad, but i promise you don't see anything, the girls are just funny.
ReplyDeleteGuilty pleasure? Celebrity news. Sometimes I flip over to E! News to see what's going on.
ReplyDeleteMine is the unmentionable HBO turned edited TBS one about four girls in a city. I would NEVER watch the HBO version (I rented the movie and was horrified, but loved the story!). I would also, NEVER tell my Mom this! I am thankful for two episodes in a row every weeknight, long after the kids are in bed!
ReplyDeleteMy guilty pleasure tv shows are One Tree Hill and America's Next Top Model. Tyra Banks love for her self is like a train wreck I can't help but watch.
ReplyDeletehmm guilty pleasures? one HAS to be nice rich, full-fat premium or gourmet icecream. LOL a no-no now that i am actually on a diet! i also love to watch america's next top model...i don't know WHY. it's not like there is killer hook or anything, nor am i ever dreaming to be a model myself...LOL. another is, i get hooked on these 'teenage' shows that are shown on the-n. one in particular is instant star, but now that the series is over i am free from the bonds of that show. LOL i just love "jude's" (alexz johnson)voice! and her songs are found on my blog too :)
ReplyDeleteJason and I watch Desperate Housewives every sunday night (sfter we put the kids to bed of course)! We are both hooked. This will sound weird, but I find myself trying to figure out which of the girls people are most like. It actually is quite funny.
ReplyDeleteMy other guilty pleasure - bread. I love making, baking and eating bread. I could never do a no carb diet!
My "scandalous" tv show is america's next top model. I would so be a model...except I am too short and to fat.
ReplyDeleteoh, desperate housewives is the BEST!!! i seriously have seen every single episode since the beginning and i actually think it has gotten less racy than it used to be. i love your blog, it's so much fun!!
